Google Releases the Pixel 2

Google released the Pixel 2 in October 2017 with a strong emphasis on computational photography. The phone used only one rear camera while several competitors were adding dual-camera systems.

Google’s portrait mode estimated subject separation using machine learning and the dual-pixel structure of the camera sensor, where each pixel could provide two slightly different views. HDR+ combined multiple short exposures to reduce noise and preserve highlights without relying on one long exposure.

The Pixel 2 demonstrated that camera quality was becoming a software problem as much as an optics problem. Smartphone sensors and lenses are physically small, so multi-frame processing, learned models, and specialized image pipelines can compensate for hardware limits in ways a conventional camera cannot.
