If you are beginning Computer Engineering in 2017, welcome to a field full of attractive buzzwords.
Artificial intelligence, mobile development, cybersecurity, data science, and cloud computing all sound exciting, and they are. But your first task is not to chase every trend. Your first task is to build foundations strong enough that you can understand trends instead of merely following them.
Programming will matter. So will mathematics, algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, operating systems, databases, and networks. Some of these subjects may feel distant from the products you use every day. Later, you will notice that they are the hidden structure beneath those products.
Do not worry if you do not know your specialization yet. The first years are for exploration. Try different areas. Build small projects. Read documentation even when it is difficult. Work with classmates. Learn how to debug without panic.
The most valuable habit you can develop is honest learning: knowing what you understand, noticing what you do not, and closing that gap step by step.
Welcome to the department. The field changes quickly, but careful thinking remains useful.
