If you are beginning Computer Engineering in 2017, you are joining the field at an interesting time. Mobile applications, cloud platforms, artificial intelligence, connected devices, and open-source software are becoming increasingly important.
You will encounter many of these technologies during your education, but your real goal is not to memorize what is popular today. It is to understand the fundamentals behind computing.
You will learn how algorithms solve problems, how operating systems manage resources, how computers communicate over networks, how databases organize information, and how software and hardware work together.
Some courses will be easy to enjoy immediately. Others may require patience. Programming assignments can fail because of a single character. A difficult problem may take hours to solve. These moments are part of becoming an engineer.
Do not study only for exams. Build small projects. Read code written by others. Explore technologies outside the classroom. Work with your friends and learn how to explain your ideas clearly.
The field will continue to change while you are studying. That is not a problem. A strong foundation will help you learn whatever comes next.
