Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2017

Every November 10, Turkiye remembers Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In 2017, the founding years were far enough away that memory required conscious care. Dates remain on calendars, photographs remain on walls, but understanding does not preserve itself automatically.

Ataturk’s work on language, education, culture, and public life reminds us that a nation is held together by shared meanings as much as shared borders. Those meanings need to be taught, discussed, and renewed. Otherwise memory becomes decoration.

This is why November 10 should make room for more than official words. It should lead people back to reading, listening, and thinking: what problem was Ataturk trying to solve, what kind of citizen did he imagine, and what does that ask of us now?

The answer will not be exactly the same in every decade. But the need for reason, education, and responsibility remains.
