Welcome to Computer Engineering in 2025.
You are starting at a time when coding assistants and agentic tools are becoming part of everyday software development. This can make learning faster, but it can also create a trap: a student may produce answers without building understanding.
Use AI tools as helpers, not as substitutes for thought. Ask them questions, compare explanations, and let them show alternatives. But when you submit code, solve a problem, or make a design decision, make sure you understand what is happening. Engineering requires responsibility.
The basics still matter. Programming, algorithms, mathematics, computer architecture, operating systems, databases, networks, and software engineering give you the ability to reason about systems. Without them, tools become magic boxes. With them, tools become useful instruments.
During your first year, build small things. A calculator, a simple game, a personal website, a command-line tool, a tiny database project: each one will teach you something real. Finish projects, read errors, revise your code, and explain what you learned.
Welcome to the department. Learn the new tools, but do not skip the slow work that makes you an engineer.
