The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2024

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2024, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
By July 2024, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D — launched April 2023 — has been the recommended gaming CPU for fifteen months, and it is still the right answer. AMD refreshed the AM5 lineup with Ryzen 9000 (Zen 5) announced at Computex June 2024, but launch is not until August 2024. Intel’s Core i9-14900K (14th gen, Raptor Lake Refresh) is a competitive alternative but draws around 250W under sustained multi-core load, which requires a serious cooler and may throttle in smaller cases. For pure gaming, the 7800X3D’s 3D V-Cache advantage remains decisive in most benchmarks.
The GPU market is stable relative to 2022’s supply chaos. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 (October 2022) remains the uncontested single-card performance leader in July 2024. The RTX 4080 Super launched January 2024 at $999 — a meaningful improvement over the original 4080 and a better value relative to the 4090 for buyers who prioritize efficiency. AMD’s RX 7900 XTX is competitive in rasterization but trails in ray tracing and does not support DLSS 3 Frame Generation, which has become an important differentiator in supported titles.
DDR5 memory prices have fallen considerably from 2022 launch levels. DDR5-6000 CL30 at 32GB is now the performance sweet spot for AM5 — AMD’s memory controller is tuned for DDR5-6000, and prices have normalized to roughly 20–30% more than comparable DDR4 capacity.
Intel Arrow Lake (Intel Core Ultra 200 series) was announced but is not available until October 2024. The RTX 50 series (Blackwell) exists only in rumor.

Why this CPU?
A newer model number is not automatically better for games. On July 1, 2024 the 7800X3D remained an extraordinary gaming CPU, and spending more on a many-core chip would not improve the thing I care about most.
Why this GPU?
The RTX 4090 was still the uncontested enthusiast target. Rather than inventing an upgrade that does not exist yet, I keep it and improve the surrounding machine with more SSD capacity, airflow and quieter cooling.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $2,800–3,300 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
The platform feels almost unchanged from 2023, and the GPU remains extremely expensive. But that is historically honest: some years are refinement years.
My verdict
I like this build because it refuses pointless upgrades. If the best gaming CPU/GPU combination is still the best, I would keep it and spend money on silence, storage and ergonomics.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
