Apple Announces Apple Intelligence

Apple announced Apple Intelligence at WWDC in June 2024, integrating generative AI into iPhone, iPad, and Mac features such as writing assistance, image creation, notifications, and Siri.

Apple emphasized a layered execution model. Smaller tasks could run on-device, while more demanding requests could use “Private Cloud Compute” servers built around Apple silicon. Apple said these servers were designed so user data would not be retained and so aspects of the software could be independently inspected.

The architecture reflected Apple’s privacy positioning: generative AI features still needed cloud-scale models, but the company wanted the transition between local and remote computation to be explicit and constrained. It also partnered with OpenAI for optional ChatGPT access when users requested capabilities outside Apple’s own models.
