Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022, ending months of attempts to withdraw from the agreement. He immediately dismissed several senior executives and soon began large reductions in the workforce.

The technical risk was unusual: Twitter was a continuously operating distributed system handling timelines, messaging, advertising, abuse detection, recommendations, and APIs. Large staff reductions did not instantly shut the service down because mature systems contain automation and redundancy, but they reduced the number of engineers available to maintain and change those systems safely.

Over the following months, verification, API access, moderation rules, and infrastructure were changed rapidly. The period became a real-world example of how organizational decisions can affect the reliability and evolution of a complex software platform even when the underlying servers keep running.
