Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022, ending months of attempts to withdraw from the agreement. He immediately dismissed several senior executives and soon began large reductions in the workforce.
The technical risk was unusual: Twitter was a continuously operating distributed system handling timelines, messaging, advertising, abuse detection, recommendations, and APIs.
