Apple Introduces the A15 Bionic

Apple introduced the A15 Bionic with the iPhone 13 family in September 2021. The chip used six CPU cores, a redesigned GPU configuration, a 16-core Neural Engine, and dedicated image-processing hardware.

A15’s importance was less about one benchmark than about specialization. Features such as Cinematic mode depended on real-time depth estimation, video encoding, image-signal processing, and machine-learning inference working together while staying inside a phone’s power budget.

Apple used different GPU core counts in some A15 products, showing how one silicon design could be scaled across devices. The chip later appeared in iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV hardware, illustrating the economic advantage of reusing a mature SoC across several product lines.
