The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2013

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2013, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
2013 marks the year when 2560×1440 gaming becomes a serious target rather than a curiosity. Korean IPS monitors from manufacturers like Achieva Shimian and Qnix have brought 27-inch 1440p panels to the $350–400 range, and the GTX 780 is one of the first GPUs that makes running demanding games at that resolution at high settings actually practical.
Intel launched Haswell (4th generation Core) in June 2013. The gaming improvement over Ivy Bridge is modest, but building on a new platform rather than a previous-generation socket makes sense for longevity. AMD launched the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition as a competitive response to Kepler, but NVIDIA’s GTX 780 — launched May 23 — is a stronger single-GPU option at the flagship price point. The GTX Titan launched in February at $999 and remains the fastest single card available, but its price-to-performance ratio is difficult to justify.

Why this CPU?
Haswell’s gaming improvement over Ivy Bridge is real but modest — around five to ten percent in most titles. The reason to choose the 4770K over keeping a 3770K is the new platform: Z87 supports DDR3 at higher speeds with better memory controllers, and starting on Haswell means staying on a current socket for future upgrades. Eight threads are increasingly useful for game streaming and background tasks even if games themselves still primarily use four.
Why this GPU?
The GTX 780 launched at $649 with 3 GB of GDDR5 and NVIDIA’s GK110 chip — the same die as the Titan, with two SMXes disabled and the memory bus reduced from 384-bit to 384-bit (the same). Reviews found it within ten to fifteen percent of the $999 Titan in most games, making the Titan almost impossible to defend at twice the price. For 1440p gaming at high settings, the 780 is the realistic choice.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $1,850–2,100 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
The GTX 770 at $399 offers significantly better value per dollar for 1080p gaming. I am paying for 1440p headroom — specifically the 3 GB frame buffer, which matters at higher resolutions with high texture quality — rather than raw price/performance.
My verdict
For 2013 I want a quiet, serious 1440p machine rather than a flashy benchmark rig. The Define R4 case, the NH-D14 cooler, and the 840 Pro SSD are all chosen for quality and longevity rather than aesthetics. The 4770K and GTX 780 fit that goal.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
