Monopoly

The classic board game for 2–8 players, each either human or a computer player (“AI (Test)”). Players move around the board, buy properties, collect rent, build houses and hotels, mortgage, trade and try to bankrupt everyone else.

How to play

  • Setup: choose the number of players, their names, colours and whether each is human or AI, then press Start Game.
  • Roll Dice moves the current player. Doubles give another roll; three doubles in a row send you to jail.
  • Buy shows messages and lets you buy the square you landed on. If you do not buy it, the property is auctioned to all players.
  • Manage lists your properties: tick one, then buy or sell houses or mortgage it. Building requires the whole colour group.
  • Trade lets you offer money and properties to another player, who accepts or rejects.
  • View stats (right of the board) shows every player's holdings. Hover a square to see its title deed.
  • If you cannot pay a debt, you must Resign. Refreshing the page ends the game.

Connection to Chapter 5

  • Auctions: an unbought property is sold in an open ascending (English) auction. Bidding up to your private value of the property is the natural strategy; the winner pays roughly the second-highest value.
  • Valuations depend on the others: a property is worth more to a player who already owns the rest of its colour group (complementarities), so values are not independent.
  • Trading is bilateral bargaining: a trade happens only if both sides gain, and the split of the surplus depends on bargaining power and outside options.

About the board

This is a port of an open-source JavaScript Monopoly (by Daniel Moyer, MIT licence). Its board is larger than the 800 × 600 game area used by the other simulations, so it is drawn smaller to fit; hover a square to see its card and title deed at full size.
