Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2023

Every November 10, Turkiye remembers Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In 2023, the Republic reached its centennial. That made the day feel different. November 10 was no longer only a yearly act of remembrance; it stood inside a hundred-year frame of struggle, construction, change, and unfinished work.

A century is long enough to create pride, but it is also long enough to create distance. Ataturk can easily become a symbol that everyone recognizes and too few people study carefully. The centennial should push in the opposite direction: back to reading, understanding, and asking what kind of public life his ideas require.

The Republic’s first century was built by many generations. Its second century will not be protected by ceremony alone. It will need better education, stronger institutions, more scientific confidence, and citizens who take responsibility without waiting for perfect conditions.
