Starting Computer Engineering in 2023 feels especially interesting because artificial intelligence has suddenly become part of everyday conversation.
Generative AI tools can now produce text, images, and code. You will probably use some of these tools during your education. But your purpose here is not simply to learn how to use them.
Your purpose is to understand the systems behind them.
Computer Engineering will teach you programming, algorithms, data structures, operating systems, databases, computer networks, computer architecture, and software engineering. These foundations will help you understand not only today’s AI systems, but also whatever technologies arrive next.
Do not treat AI as a shortcut around learning. Use it carefully. Ask why a solution works. Check results. Write code yourself. Learn how to debug. Build the ability to recognize when an answer is wrong.
Your university years are also a chance to experiment. Create projects. Join competitions. Work with open-source software. Explore cybersecurity, embedded systems, robotics, cloud computing, and machine learning.
You do not need to decide your entire career now.
The most valuable skill you can develop is the ability to keep learning as technology changes.
