Welcome to Computer Engineering in 2023.

This year, generative AI is impossible to ignore. Tools can write code, explain concepts, summarize documentation, and sometimes sound more confident than they deserve. For a new student, this is both useful and dangerous.

Use these tools, but do not outsource your understanding to them. If an assistant gives you code you cannot explain, you have not learned the topic yet. If it solves an assignment while you remain confused, it has helped you finish a task but not become an engineer.

The fundamentals matter even more now. Programming, algorithms, data structures, mathematics, computer architecture, operating systems, databases, and networks give you the ability to judge what a tool produces. Without that judgment, automation can make you faster at being wrong.

Build your own projects. Debug your own mistakes. Ask why a solution works. Compare alternatives. Talk with classmates. Learn to read error messages patiently.

Computer engineering in 2023 is not less important because AI tools exist. It is more interesting because understanding, judgment, and responsibility have become even more valuable.

Google unveiled the Pixel 11 family on August 12, 2026, maintaining the late-summer announcement window that Google established with Pixel 9 (August 2024) and Pixel 10 (August 2025).
