The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2023

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2023, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.

The context

July 2023 is one of the most interesting CPU moments in recent gaming history. AMD launched the Ryzen 7 7800X3D on April 6, 2023 at $449. It uses AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology — a second SRAM die stacked directly on top of the compute die, bringing total L3 cache to 96MB from the usual 32MB on the standard 7700X. In games, cache-bound performance problems are common, and this extra cache frequently makes the 7800X3D the fastest gaming CPU available, often beating Intel’s Core i9-13900K despite the Intel chip having four more performance cores and higher single-thread clock speeds. The 7800X3D is a narrowly optimized product — it runs at lower clocks and costs more than alternatives for productivity workloads — but for pure gaming, it is the right choice.

NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series (Ada Lovelace, TSMC 4N) launched in October 2022 and has expanded since. The RTX 4090 at $1,599 is the undisputed single-card performance leader. DLSS 3 Frame Generation (exclusive to RTX 40 series) uses optical flow to generate intermediate frames, doubling frame rates in supported titles at a latency cost. AMD’s RX 7900 XTX is competitive in rasterization performance but lacks frame generation and trails in ray-traced workloads.

The RTX 4090’s 12VHPWR connector was flagged for melt incidents on some cables; AMD submitted a safety advisory mid-2023. Using the cable without sharp bends is essential.

Why this CPU?

The 7800X3D launched April 6 and is the kind of CPU a gaming build should celebrate: eight cores plus a large 3D V-Cache rather than extra cores that mostly sit idle. I would take it over a more expensive Ryzen 9 for gaming.

Why this GPU?

The RTX 4090 had been available since October 2022 at $1,599, with 24 GB of GDDR6X. NVIDIA positioned it for maximum-settings 4K high-frame-rate gaming, and nothing else changes the experience as much as this GPU.

What I would pay

A complete build would be roughly $2,700–3,100 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.

The weak point

The GPU is physically enormous and power hungry. Case clearance, the 12VHPWR cable bend and PSU quality are engineering concerns, not cosmetic details.

My verdict

This is one of the best-balanced extreme builds in the series. The CPU is chosen for games, not status; almost all of the extravagance is concentrated where it matters: the RTX 4090.

The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
