Google announced PaLM 2 at I/O in May 2023 as the language-model family behind products such as Bard and new generative-AI features across Google Workspace.

Google emphasized improvements in multilingual text, reasoning, and code. PaLM 2 was trained on a broader mixture of languages and programming material than its predecessor and was offered in several sizes so the architecture could serve both large cloud workloads and smaller deployments.

The release arrived two months after GPT-4 and made the competitive landscape clear: major software companies were no longer building one isolated chatbot. They were creating model families intended to sit behind search, office software, developer tools, cloud APIs, and mobile applications.
