Microsoft Expands Its Partnership With OpenAI

Microsoft announced a new multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI in January 2023. The partnership tied frontier AI models closely to Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure and product strategy.
Training large language models requires clusters of thousands of accelerators connected through high-speed networks. Microsoft had already built specialized Azure supercomputing systems for OpenAI, combining GPUs, distributed storage, and networking optimized for enormous parallel jobs.
The deal also gave Microsoft access to OpenAI models for products such as GitHub Copilot and later Microsoft 365 Copilot. It demonstrated that the AI competition was not only about model research; access to capital, data centers, accelerators, and global inference capacity had become strategic assets.
