Welcome to Our Department
Published:
If you are joining Computer Engineering in 2022, you are starting at a time when both software and hardware are receiving renewed attention.
Cloud platforms, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data systems continue to grow, while global interest in processors and semiconductor production has reminded everyone that computing depends on more than code.
Your education will introduce you to both sides of this world.
You will study programming, algorithms, databases, operating systems, networks, digital systems, and computer architecture. Over time, these subjects will begin to connect. You will see that good software depends on the systems beneath it, and good hardware becomes useful through the software built for it.
Do not rush to specialize too early. Explore different areas. Try web development. Work with microcontrollers. Learn basic machine learning. Study security. Join a team project.
You may discover that your strongest interest is different from what you expected when you entered the department.
Also remember that engineering is collaborative. Learning how to explain a technical idea, document your work, review code, and work with others is part of your education too.
The next few years will be challenging, but they can also be extremely rewarding.
