If you are starting Computer Engineering in 2022, welcome.

You are entering the field at a time when artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data systems, and software platforms are part of ordinary technology news. This makes the field exciting, but it also makes it easy to feel rushed.

Do not rush past the basics. The early courses are not obstacles placed before the interesting parts. They are the language of the interesting parts. Algorithms, mathematics, programming, computer architecture, operating systems, databases, and networks will help you understand why modern systems work and why they fail.

Also remember that engineers build for people. A secure system, a usable interface, a reliable service, and a well-documented project all require more than clever code. They require judgment and responsibility.

Try different areas before deciding what kind of engineer you want to become. Build a web project, write a small tool, experiment with hardware, read about security, and learn how teams organize software.

Welcome to the department. Let the excitement of the field motivate you, but let fundamentals guide you.
