The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2022

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2022, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
Mid-2022 is a complicated moment to buy GPU hardware. The RTX 3000 series launched in September 2020 but spent most of 2021 and early 2022 nearly impossible to buy at MSRP. Cryptocurrency mining and supply chain disruptions drove prices to two or three times MSRP. By July 2022, cryptocurrency prices have fallen sharply — Ethereum dropped below $1,000 — and mining profitability has collapsed, returning GPU inventory to shelves at or near MSRP for the first time in over a year. This is, finally, a reasonable time to buy.
On the CPU side, Intel’s Alder Lake (12th generation, launched November 2021) introduced a hybrid architecture with Performance-cores and Efficient-cores on the same die — borrowed from mobile chip designs but applied to desktop. The i9-12900K was competitive with or ahead of AMD’s Ryzen 5000 in gaming. AMD’s Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) has been announced but is not available by July 1. NVIDIA’s RTX 4000 has been mentioned but is months away. Popular games: Elden Ring (February 2022), Dying Light 2, God of War PC port, Horizon Zero Dawn.
DDR5 memory is available on the 12th generation Intel platform but still expensive and with less mature XMP profiles than DDR4. The performance advantage over high-frequency DDR4 is real but modest for gaming.

Why this CPU?
The 12900K’s hybrid architecture (8 P-cores + 8 E-cores, 16 total cores, 24 threads) made it the gaming flagship in late 2021. I skip the 12900KS released in January 2022 — it costs significantly more for a modest clock-speed increase that gaming benchmarks do not meaningfully reflect. The 12900K already outperforms AMD’s Ryzen 9 5900X in most gaming workloads while matching or exceeding it in content creation.
Why this GPU?
The RTX 3090 Ti launched March 29 at $1,999 with NVIDIA’s GA102 chip fully enabled: 10,752 CUDA cores, 24 GB of GDDR6X at 21 Gbps. In 4K gaming benchmarks, it is approximately 10–15% ahead of the RTX 3090. The value case is poor — the RTX 3080 Ti at $1,199 offers around 90% of the performance — but the premise here is a no-compromise dream build in July 2022.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $3,500–4,100 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
Power, heat and price. The 12900K can draw 250W under full load; the 3090 Ti can draw 450W. Together they demand a 1200W PSU, a 420mm radiator for the CPU, and a large case with strong airflow. This is the least elegant machine in the series.
My verdict
I would build this only because the premise is a no-budget-limit gaming PC in July 2022. The RTX 3090 Ti is excessive in the way late-generation flagships always are — the RTX 3080 Ti at 60% of the price would make more practical sense. But if I am building a time capsule of maximum 4K performance at this specific moment, this is the machine.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
