The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2021

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2021, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
July 2021 is the worst time in recent memory to buy graphics hardware. The causes are layered: a global semiconductor shortage affecting production across all categories, plus cryptocurrency mining profitability — Ethereum was trading around $2,000–2,500 in July 2021 after recovering from a May crash — making GPUs profitable to mine with, which consumed retail stock. RTX 3080 cards were launching at $699 MSRP but selling consistently for $1,200–1,500 in the secondary market. Bots were clearing retail stock within seconds of restocking alerts. “Founding edition” partner board pricing was theoretical.
AMD launched Ryzen 5000 (Zen 3) in November 2020. The architecture produced the biggest IPC improvement AMD had delivered in years, and the Ryzen 5 5600X ($299), Ryzen 7 5800X ($449), and Ryzen 9 5900X ($549) reclaimed the gaming CPU crown from Intel. The i9-11900K (Intel Rocket Lake, March 2021) was a disappointment — minor performance improvement over Comet Lake at higher prices — so AMD’s lead in mid-2021 is clear.
NVIDIA’s Ampere (RTX 30 series) launched September 2020 on Samsung’s 8nm process. The RTX 3090 (September, $1,499) and RTX 3080 (September, $699) were the initial flagships. The RTX 3080 Ti launched June 3, 2021 at $1,199, positioned between the 3080 and 3090 in performance and price. AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series (RDNA2, October 2020) is competitive in rasterization at similar price points, but driver maturity and DLSS availability give NVIDIA an edge in many workflows.
PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs are now the standard for enthusiast builds. Samsung’s 980 Pro is the mainstream performance choice.

Why this CPU?
AMD launched the 5900X at $549 with 12 Zen 3 cores and marketed it directly around top gaming performance. It gives me excellent frame rates without sacrificing streaming, compiling or background workloads.
Why this GPU?
The RTX 3080 Ti had launched only weeks earlier, on June 3, at $1,199 and NVIDIA called it its new gaming flagship. I choose it over the RTX 3090 because the 3090’s huge 24 GB memory pool is more useful to creators than to games.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $2,500–3,000 at MSRP, often much more during the shortage in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
Availability. The semiconductor and crypto-era GPU shortage means MSRP is almost theoretical; actually finding the card may be harder than paying for it.
My verdict
This is where I stop equating ‘most expensive’ with ‘best gaming choice.’ The 3080 Ti gives me flagship-class gaming without paying for 24 GB of memory I probably will not use.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
