Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2019

Every November 10, Turkiye remembers Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In 2019, the hundredth anniversary of Ataturk’s arrival in Samsun gave the year a special weight. Samsun marks not an ending, but a beginning: a moment when responsibility was accepted before success was guaranteed.

That is one reason the story still matters. It is easy to read history backward, as if every result was inevitable. It was not. The national struggle required courage, organization, persuasion, and patience at a time when the future was uncertain.

November 10, in this centennial year of that beginning, should remind us that public responsibility often starts before conditions are ideal. Ataturk did not wait for certainty before acting. He read the moment, trusted the possibility of a nation, and worked toward it.

The best remembrance is not passive admiration. It is the willingness to carry responsibility in one’s own time.
