If you are starting Computer Engineering in 2019, you are entering a discipline that touches almost every industry.
Software is inside phones, financial systems, factories, hospitals, communication networks, cars, games, and entertainment platforms. Your education will help you understand the systems behind this digital world, but it will also challenge the simple idea that computer engineering is only programming.
Programming is important, of course. Yet the field also includes algorithms, data structures, operating systems, databases, networks, computer architecture, software design, mathematics, and teamwork. At first these subjects may feel separate. Over time they begin to connect.
Give yourself time. University problems can be frustrating because they are designed to stretch you. A bug, a proof, or a difficult assignment is not evidence that you chose the wrong field. Often it is simply the normal shape of learning.
Use these years to experiment. Build applications. Try embedded systems. Explore cybersecurity. Learn about artificial intelligence. Contribute to open source if you can. You do not need to choose your path immediately.
Most importantly, learn how to learn. The tools will change; that habit will stay with you.
