The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2019

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2019, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.

The context

July 2019 is a frustrating time to build — not because the hardware is bad, but because AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series (Zen 2) and Radeon RX 5700 series launch on July 7, just six days after the snapshot date. The Ryzen 9 3900X at $499 would have been a serious argument against the i9-9900K, and the RX 5700 XT at $399 would change the mid-range GPU picture significantly. A buyer on July 1, 2019 does not know the exact launch prices or performance figures — only the specs and suggested pricing previewed at Computex in late May.

On the GPU side, NVIDIA Turing (RTX 20 series) launched September 2018. The RTX 2080 Ti at $999–1199 is the performance leader, with hardware ray tracing support and tensor cores for DLSS. Early ray tracing in Battlefield V and Metro Exodus demonstrated the technology, though performance costs were significant and DLSS 1.0 quality was disappointing. The RTX 2080 Super would launch July 23 — again, just weeks after the snapshot date.

Intel’s Coffee Lake Refresh (9th gen) remains the gaming CPU standard. The i9-9900K launched October 2018 at $488, with eight cores and Hyper-Threading re-enabled after the 8700K, boosting to 5.0 GHz single-core. At 1440p and 4K, where GPUs bottleneck before CPUs in most titles, the difference between i9-9900K and cheaper i7-9700K is small in practice.

Why this CPU?

Ryzen 3000 would launch on July 7, not July 1. I am freezing the build to the requested date, so the 9900K remains the safe high-end gaming choice: eight fast cores and sixteen threads.

Why this GPU?

The RTX 2080 Ti was the $999-class Turing flagship, with the Founders Edition at $1,199. It was brutally expensive, but it was also the only GeForce that made early real-time ray tracing and uncompromised 4K feel remotely plausible.

What I would pay

A complete build would be roughly $2,700–3,100 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.

The weak point

Price is the weakness. The performance gain over cheaper cards does not scale with the cost, and early ray tracing often needs DLSS or reduced settings.

My verdict

This is the first build where I knowingly pay a large early-adopter tax. I do it because 4K and ray tracing are exactly the technologies I would want to experiment with.

The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
