Beginning Computer Engineering in 2018 means entering a world increasingly shaped by data, cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and connected systems.

During the coming years, you will learn much more than programming. You will study algorithms, databases, computer networks, operating systems, computer architecture, software engineering, and many other subjects that explain how modern computing systems actually work.

Do not worry if some topics seem difficult at first. University is not a place where you are expected to arrive with all the answers. It is a place where you learn how to ask better questions.

Take advantage of your time here. Develop projects outside your assignments. Learn version control. Read technical documentation. Join student activities. Work with different people. These experiences will help you understand what kind of engineer you want to become.

Technology changes quickly, but the habits of good engineers remain surprisingly stable: curiosity, discipline, patience, clear thinking, and a willingness to keep learning.

Your first year is only the beginning. You may enter the department with one career idea and discover a completely different interest later.
