The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2018

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2018, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.

The context

Mid-2018 is a strange moment to buy gaming hardware. On the GPU side, NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture (launched 2016) remains the only real option for enthusiasts — AMD’s Vega architecture, launched in 2017, cannot match the GTX 1080 Ti at the flagship price point. Rumors of NVIDIA’s next-generation Turing architecture are circulating, but no announcement has been made as of July 1. The honest advice is to either buy now or wait indefinitely.

On the CPU side, Intel’s Coffee Lake (8th generation) brought six cores to the mainstream platform — a meaningful change from the four-core era that Intel maintained for several years. AMD’s Ryzen 2000 series (Pinnacle Ridge) launched in April 2018 with the Ryzen 7 2700X as the flagship, and it is genuinely competitive. The CPU choice is more interesting than it has been in years.

The GPU market is also affected by cryptocurrency mining in 2018. Mining demand drove GPU prices well above MSRP throughout 2017 and into early 2018. Prices have partially normalized by July 2018 as mining profitability declined, but availability remains inconsistent. Popular games: Monster Hunter World, Far Cry 5, God of War (PS4 exclusive but discussed everywhere), The Witcher 3 continues to drive GPU benchmarks.

Why this CPU?

The choice between the Intel i7-8700K and AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700X is the most interesting CPU decision in this series. The 2700X has eight cores with sixteen threads and competes closely in price. For a gaming-first machine, the 8700K edges ahead in most gaming benchmarks due to Intel’s higher single-core performance and better memory latency. For a machine that does streaming, content creation, or video encoding alongside gaming, the 2700X’s extra cores make it a reasonable alternative. I am building for gaming first.

Why this GPU?

RTX was not announced by July 1. The GTX 1080 Ti — with its 11 GB GDDR5X frame buffer, 3584 CUDA cores, and 484 GB/s memory bandwidth — remained the undisputed fastest gaming GPU available. Without knowing when or what the next generation will be, waiting is purely speculative. I would buy the 1080 Ti.

What I would pay

A complete build would be roughly $1,850–2,100 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.

The weak point

The GPU is the same choice as the 2017 build. A year of NVIDIA’s Pascal dominance has produced no competitor and no upgrade path. Anyone who bought a 1080 Ti in mid-2017 has no reason to upgrade in mid-2018. Buying in 2018 means the GPU is already a year old and a new generation may arrive in months.

My verdict

I would rather own six months of excellent gaming than spend six months waiting for an unannounced product. The 8700K’s six-core Coffee Lake platform finally gives the 1080 Ti a CPU that does not create a bottleneck. The Meshify C’s excellent airflow suits the 1080 Ti’s thermal output.

The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
