The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2017

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2017, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
2017 is an interesting moment for PC gaming hardware. AMD’s Ryzen processors launched in March and broke Intel’s monopoly on high-performance desktop CPUs with competitive multi-threaded performance at lower prices. The CPU landscape is genuinely interesting for the first time in years. NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture (launched mid-2016) remains unchallenged by AMD on the GPU side — Vega has been announced but is not yet available as of July 1. For enthusiasts, this means waiting on AMD’s GPU response or buying Pascal now.
1440p at 144Hz has become the premium gaming target. 4K gaming is possible but GPU-limited even at this price point — the 1080 Ti is the only card that makes it practical. Popular games of the period include The Witcher 3, Battlefield 1, Overwatch, DOOM (2016), and the newly released Prey and Nier:Automata.

Why this CPU?
The AMD Ryzen 7 1800X has eight cores at competitive prices and is compelling for content creation. For a gaming-first machine, however, I prefer the 7700K’s very high clocks. Most games in 2017 do not scale well beyond four cores, and the 7700K’s 4.5 GHz turbo, combined with Intel’s lower inter-core latency, still delivers better gaming frame rates in the majority of titles. If this were a general workstation I would reconsider.
Why this GPU?
The GTX 1080 Ti launched March 10 at $699 with 11 GB of GDDR5X and Pascal’s GP102 chip. NVIDIA positioned it as up to 35% faster than the GTX 1080 and ahead of the $1,200 Titan X in many gaming workloads. That makes the Titan impossible to justify. Vega 64 has been announced but AMD has not shipped it by July 1, so it is not a real option yet regardless of the paper specs.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $1,900–2,150 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
Four CPU cores will become the machine’s long-term weakness. Games are beginning to use more threads, and Ryzen has made multi-core performance normal at enthusiast prices. The GPU is so good that I expect it to outlive the CPU platform by several years.
My verdict
The 1080 Ti is the star. I would spend less on decorative parts and make sure this card, a good monitor and a quality PSU receive the budget.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
