Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2015

Every November 10, Turkiye remembers Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
In 2015, public life felt fast: faster communication, faster reactions, faster arguments. Ataturk’s reforms point toward a slower and more difficult kind of change. They show that lasting progress requires institutions, education, discipline, and the patience to build.
It is easy to admire reform after it succeeds. It is harder to remember how much resistance, uncertainty, and work reform requires while it is happening. Ataturk’s importance lies partly in that courage: the courage to move a country toward a future that was not yet comfortable or guaranteed.
November 10 is a useful day to think about that difference between reaction and construction. A republic cannot live on excitement alone. It needs people who can organize, study, teach, write, produce, and take responsibility without applause.
The silence at 09:05 honors a life. The work after the silence honors the direction of that life.
We remember Ataturk with respect and gratitude.
