The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2015

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2015, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.

The context

Mid-2015 is a pivotal moment in gaming hardware. NVIDIA’s Maxwell architecture delivered a significant efficiency improvement over Kepler — the GTX 980, launched in September 2014, offered performance close to the two-GPU GTX 690 while consuming half the power. The GTX 980 Ti, announced June 1, 2015, brings Maxwell’s high-end capability down to a justifiable price.

AMD is at a disadvantage. The R9 390X, launched June 2015, is a competent 4K card with 8 GB of HBM memory, but it runs hot, consumes more power than comparable NVIDIA cards, and at 1440p the GTX 980 Ti matches or beats it. AMD’s true next-generation architecture (Fiji) is the R9 Fury X, also launched June 2015, but its 4 GB HBM memory is a constraint at 4K.

Intel’s Skylake and DDR4 are expected later in 2015, but nothing has launched by July 1. Popular games: The Witcher 3 (launched May 2015 and immediately became the GPU benchmark reference), GTA V (PC port launched April 2015), Batman: Arkham Knight, Project Cars.

  • Gaming target: 1440p high refresh, with practical entry into 4K

Why this CPU?

Skylake had not launched by July 1 — it arrived in August 2015. The enthusiast alternative is Intel’s X99 platform with Haswell-E, which offers six to eight cores but at significantly higher cost. For a gaming-focused build, the mature 4790K on Z97 is the correct choice: high clocks (up to 4.4 GHz turbo), proven platform stability, and strong single-core performance. The upcoming Skylake transition is a reason to consider the value carefully, but the 4790K will game well for years.

Why this GPU?

The GTX 980 Ti launched June 1 at $649. It uses the same GM200 chip as the $999 Titan X, with two SMXes disabled and a slightly smaller frame buffer (6 GB versus 12 GB). In most gaming benchmarks, it delivers 90–95% of Titan X performance at 65% of the price. The 6 GB frame buffer is adequate for 4K gaming in 2015 and significantly more future-proof than the 2 GB of the 2012-era flagship.

The R9 Fury X from AMD is a genuine alternative but runs warmer and louder under sustained load. For a build emphasizing quiet operation (the Define R5 case, the NH-D15 cooler), the GTX 980 Ti fits better.

What I would pay

A complete build would be roughly $1,900–2,200 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.

The weak point

The Z97/LGA1150 platform is near the end of its life. DDR4 and Skylake are arriving later this year. In six months, this build will be on an older platform. The GTX 980 Ti is strong enough that I would accept that trade — GPU longevity matters more than CPU platform longevity in a gaming machine.

My verdict

If I had to spend my own money on July 1, 2015, most of the excitement would be in the 980 Ti. The Witcher 3 has just arrived and The Witcher 3 is beautiful at 1440p ultra settings. The rest of the machine exists to keep this card fed, cool, and quiet.

The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
