Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2014

Every November 10, Turkiye pauses to remember Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In 2014, a century had passed since the beginning of the First World War. That wider historical frame gives November 10 a deeper meaning. Ataturk belonged to a generation that saw the cost of war closely. His later emphasis on sovereignty, peace, education, and modernization came from experience, not from comfortable theory.

Remembering him only as a victorious commander leaves the story incomplete. The more difficult lesson is what came after war: building a republic, reforming institutions, and trying to give a tired society a modern direction.

That is why peace matters in Ataturk’s legacy. Peace is not passivity. It is the condition that allows schools, science, culture, and production to grow. A country that knows the cost of destruction should value the patient work of construction.
