Apple Introduces the First Apple Watch

Apple unveiled the first Apple Watch in September 2014, although the device did not go on sale until 2015. The watch combined a small touch display with the Digital Crown, a rotating control intended to avoid covering the screen with a finger.

The hardware included heart-rate sensing, motion sensors, haptic feedback, and a custom system-in-package called the S1. Early versions depended heavily on a nearby iPhone for networking and application logic, so the watch initially acted more like a companion device than an independent computer.

Apple’s long-term direction became clearer over later generations as GPS, cellular connectivity, faster processors, and health sensors moved onto the watch itself. The first model established wearables as a major Apple platform rather than a simple accessory.
