Every November 10, Turkiye remembers Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
In 2013, the Republic turned ninety. That milestone made remembrance feel connected to measurement: what had been built, what had endured, and what still needed care. A republic can be celebrated, but it also has to be examined honestly.
Ataturk’s legacy is often strongest when it becomes a standard rather than a slogan. Education should be better. Public reason should be stronger. Citizens should feel responsible for more than their private lives. Institutions should serve the public with dignity. These expectations are not old-fashioned; they are the normal requirements of a modern country.
The silence at 09:05 carries both gratitude and uneasiness. Gratitude for what was founded, uneasiness because the work is never finished.
Remembering Ataturk in the Republic’s ninetieth year means accepting that history gave later generations not only pride, but also homework.
We remember him with respect and reflection.
