Apple Introduces the 64-Bit A7 Processor

Apple introduced the A7 system-on-chip with the iPhone 5s in September 2013, calling it the first 64-bit processor in a consumer smartphone. The chip used Apple’s ARMv8-based Cyclone CPU cores rather than simply extending the older 32-bit design.
Moving to 64-bit allowed wider general-purpose registers, a larger virtual address space, and a new instruction-set architecture. The immediate memory advantage was limited because the phone had nowhere near 4 GB of RAM, but the architectural transition gave Apple time to move iOS and developers to 64-bit before mobile devices actually needed large address spaces.
Competitors initially treated the change as marketing, but Android hardware soon followed. Apple’s early transition demonstrated the benefit of controlling CPU design, operating system, compiler, and application ecosystem together.
