The iPhone 5 Brings LTE to Apple Phones

Apple introduced the iPhone 5 in September 2012 with LTE cellular support, a taller 4-inch display, and the new Lightning connector. LTE was the most important networking change because it brought much higher mobile data speeds than the 3G technology used by earlier iPhones.

Supporting LTE required new radio hardware, antennas, carrier certification, and careful power management. Early LTE phones from other vendors had often suffered poor battery life because of separate modem components and immature network coverage.

The iPhone 5 also replaced Apple’s 30-pin dock connector with the much smaller reversible Lightning connector. That broke compatibility with years of accessories but freed internal and external space. Both changes show the cost of platform evolution: improving hardware often means forcing an ecosystem to leave older standards behind.
