Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2011

Every November 10, Turkiye remembers Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
In 2011, the Republic was approaching its ninetieth year. Such distance can make history feel settled, as if the founding years belong safely to books and ceremonies. But the institutions created after those years survive only when people understand why they matter.
Ataturk’s legacy is not only a memory of leadership. It is also a lesson in continuity. A republic needs laws, schools, public trust, and citizens who do not treat public life as someone else’s responsibility. None of these can be protected by nostalgia alone.
Remembering Ataturk in 2011 means asking what we are doing with the institutions and ideas we inherited. Are they becoming stronger, clearer, fairer, more open to knowledge? Or are they being repeated without being understood?
The answer is never final. Each generation gives its own answer through its work.
