The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2011

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2011, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture (January 2011) is the most significant CPU generation in years. The i5-2500K and i7-2600K improved instructions-per-clock substantially over the previous Nehalem/Westmere generation, and the unlocked multiplier means reaching 4.5 GHz or even 5.0 GHz on air cooling is routinely reported by builders. Sandy Bridge marked a point where enthusiast CPUs became extremely good at gaming for a long time — a 2500K overclocked to 4.5 GHz would remain competitive in games for five or more years.
On the GPU side, NVIDIA’s Fermi architecture (GTX 480/580) is dominant at the high end. The GTX 580 launched November 2010 at $499 — fast, but hot and loud by today’s standards. The Fermi chips run warm at 85–90°C under load and consume 250W at the GTX 580 level. AMD’s competing Radeon HD 6900 series (December 2010) — the HD 6950 and HD 6970 — offers competitive performance at lower power draw, but NVIDIA’s performance crown with the 580 is not seriously challenged.
SSD adoption in gaming PCs is early but growing. The Crucial m4 and OCZ Vertex 3 (released early 2011) offer dramatically better load times at a cost of roughly $1.50–2.00 per gigabyte, which makes 256 GB the realistic maximum for most enthusiast budgets.
1080p is the dominant gaming target in July 2011. A GTX 580 provides comfortable ultra-setting performance in Crysis 2 (March 2011), the GPU benchmark of the moment. Battlefield 3 has been announced for October 2011 and is expected to be the next demanding title.

Why this CPU?
The tempting choice was the i7-2600K, but contemporary builders repeatedly noted that Hyper-Threading added little to gaming. The 2500K was cheaper, easy to overclock and became one of the great gaming CPUs of its generation.
Why this GPU?
The GTX 580 remained the fastest conventional single-GPU GeForce. I would accept its poor value over the GTX 570 because this build is about the PC I would most enjoy owning, not the cheapest way to reach 60 fps.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $1,600–1,900 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
The GPU gives diminishing returns for its price. At normal 1080p settings a GTX 570 could make more financial sense.
My verdict
Sandy Bridge plus a GTX 580 is the clean 2011 enthusiast formula. The CPU is rational; the GPU is where I allow myself to be unreasonable.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
