Intel Introduces the Sandy Bridge Architecture

Intel launched the Sandy Bridge processor family in early 2011, integrating CPU cores, graphics, memory control, and other functions more tightly onto one die. Compared with earlier designs, the integrated graphics engine was no longer a separate chip sitting elsewhere in the package.
Sandy Bridge also introduced a shared last-level cache and a ring interconnect linking CPU cores, graphics, cache slices, and the system agent. Turbo Boost 2.0 adjusted clock speeds dynamically when thermal and power headroom allowed it. For media workloads, Intel added Quick Sync Video, a fixed-function engine that could encode and decode video far more efficiently than general-purpose CPU cores.
The architecture became important because it showed where mainstream processors were heading: not toward CPU cores alone, but toward heterogeneous SoCs that mixed general computing, graphics, media engines, and power management in one package.
