The Gaming PC I Would Build in 2010

If I were building a gaming PC on July 1, 2010, this is the machine I would actually want. I am not simply choosing the most expensive part in every category. The priority is gaming performance, then reliability, cooling and enough headroom to keep the system useful for years.
The context
July 2010 is a complicated moment in GPU history. NVIDIA’s Fermi architecture (GF100/GF110) launched with the GTX 480 and GTX 470 in March 2010 — after a longer-than-expected delay that allowed AMD’s Radeon HD 5000 series (September 2009) to dominate the market for seven months. The GTX 480 is fast: it is the fastest single-GPU gaming card available in July 2010, delivering strong 1080p performance in Crysis, Just Cause 2, and other demanding titles. It also runs hot (typically 90–95°C under load) and draws around 250W, making it the loudest and hottest enthusiast GPU in memory. The HAF X case and large CPU cooler in this build are direct responses to Fermi’s thermal character.
AMD’s Radeon HD 5870 (launched September 2009) is the alternative — somewhat slower than the GTX 480 in most games but dramatically quieter, cooler (180W), and available for around $400 versus the GTX 480’s $499. AMD’s dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 is technically faster than the GTX 480 but brings the usual multi-GPU complications with scaling and frame pacing.
On the CPU side, Intel’s Nehalem (Core i7 9xx series on LGA 1366) launched November 2008 and remains the platform of choice for high-end gaming builds in mid-2010. The i7-930 offers four cores with Hyper-Threading (eight logical processors), a 45nm die, and strong overclocking potential on the X58 chipset. The six-core i7-980X at $999 is available, but games in 2010 rarely benefit from more than four cores at high clock speeds, making it a poor value for gaming.
DirectX 11, introduced with Windows 7 in October 2009, is supported by both the GTX 480 and Radeon HD 5870. The first DX11 titles are appearing in 2010, including Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Just Cause 2.

Why this CPU?
I would not buy the $999 six-core i7-980X just for games. Most 2010 titles cared more about clock speed than six cores, and the i7-930 left a huge amount of budget for the graphics card while still offering four cores, eight threads and strong overclocking.
Why this GPU?
The GTX 480 was NVIDIA’s $499 single-GPU flagship in mid-2010. The Radeon HD 5970 could be faster, but it was a dual-GPU card with the usual scaling and frame-pacing complications. I would rather own one very fast GPU.
What I would pay
A complete build would be roughly $1,900–2,200 in the U.S. market of the period. This is an approximate enthusiast-system total, not a claim that every retailer sold every part at MSRP on July 1.
The weak point
Heat and noise. The GTX 480 was famously power-hungry, so the large HAF X, NH-D14 and an oversized quality PSU are deliberate choices.
My verdict
This is the machine I would want beside a 1080p high-refresh monitor in 2010: fast where games actually need speed, without spending $1,000 on a CPU for bragging rights.
The date matters. I am judging only hardware that was available by July 1, not products announced or released later in the year. That makes each build a snapshot of what I could realistically have assembled at that moment.
