The Exam Where Even the Professor Could Not Find the Answer

There are courses you take once.
There are courses you take twice.
And then there are courses that become relationships.
By 2010, I had taken Differential Equations three times and Calculus twice from the same professor, Mustafa.
This made me, in my own words, one of the lucky and rare people to have spent that much academic time with him.
“Lucky” was doing quite a lot of work in that sentence.
Anyone who has repeated a difficult course knows the strange psychological stages involved.
The first time, you are a student.
The second time, you are experienced.
The third time, you are practically staff.
You know the classroom.
You know the book.
You know which chapters are dangerous.
You know the professor’s rhythm.
You know where previous versions of yourself failed.
At some point, the course stops feeling like a subject and starts feeling like unfinished personal business.
Calculus became that for me.
The last time I took it, I prepared seriously for the final.
There was a red-covered book I had reached the point of never wanting to see again for the rest of my life.
Before the exam, I solved every problem in it.
Every one.
That is the kind of preparation that produces dangerous confidence.
Not arrogance exactly.
More like exhausted optimism.
You have done the work.
You have suffered enough.
Surely the universe has now received the necessary payment.
You enter the exam expecting difficulty, of course.
But a familiar difficulty.
Something recognizable.
A problem that says:
Yes, you prepared for me.
Instead, I looked at the questions and could not find the answer to any of them.
Not one.
This is a special form of academic horror.
When you have not studied, failure has an explanation.
You know what happened.
You did not prepare.
Fine.
But when you have studied everything you could think of and still stare at the exam as if it were written for another species, the mind turns against itself.
The problem cannot be the preparation.
I solved the entire book.
The problem cannot be the exam.
The professor surely knows what he is doing.
Therefore the remaining variable is obvious.
Me.
I left the exam and spent the rest of the day essentially telling myself:
I am an idiot.
Not metaphorically.
That was the verdict.
The internal court had reached a unanimous decision.
This is another thing university teaches that is rarely in the syllabus:
how easily one bad exam can temporarily redefine your entire intelligence.
A few sheets of paper.
A couple of hours.
Some questions.
And suddenly years of evidence disappear.
You forget every problem you have solved before.
Every course you passed.
Every project you completed.
Every difficult thing you eventually understood.
The exam says no.
So the brain says:
Perhaps I have misunderstood my entire life.
This reaction is irrational.
It is also very common.
Then came the information that changed the story.
Two of the questions were wrong.
The professor himself could not find their answers.
There are moments in life when relief and anger arrive together.
This was one of them.
On one hand:
Excellent.
I am not an idiot.
At least not for this reason.
On the other:
I spent an entire day mentally beating myself up because two questions did not work in the first place.
The emotional equation changes very quickly.
Before:
I cannot solve this because I am incompetent.
After:
Nobody can solve this because the problem is broken.
That is a profound difference.
And it contains a lesson I have remembered far beyond mathematics.
When something refuses to work, do not immediately assume the failure is yours.
This sounds obvious in engineering.
If a program produces an impossible result, you inspect the code.
The input.
The assumptions.
The compiler.
The hardware.
The specification.
The test.
You do not begin with:
I must be fundamentally stupid.
Yet students do exactly that in exams.
And adults do it elsewhere.
A conversation goes badly.
A job application fails.
A system rejects something.
A plan collapses.
The first instinct can be:
I failed.
Sometimes yes.
Sometimes the question itself is wrong.
Sometimes the requirement is contradictory.
Sometimes the process is broken.
Sometimes the other person does not know what they want.
Sometimes there is no correct answer available.
The difficulty is distinguishing these cases without using “the system is wrong” as an excuse for every mistake.
That balance takes experience.
You have to be willing to admit:
I did not know this.
But also willing to ask:
Does this even make sense?
Good engineers need both instincts.
So do good students.
Blind confidence is dangerous.
Blind self-blame is not better.
My Differential Equations experience with the same professor had a different flavor.
By then, another friend and I had apparently developed the kind of desperate superstition common among repeat students.
We made a pact.
If we solved the final question, we would pass.
No sophisticated statistical model.
No weighted grade calculation.
One question.
That was the totem.
The exam ended.
We saw each other.
There was no need for discussion.
I said:
“33.”
He said the same.
That was enough.
We had both reached the same answer.
For a moment, 33 was not a number.
It was salvation.
Every student who has left a mathematics exam and immediately compared answers understands this ritual.
You do not even ask:
How was it?
Too broad.
Too emotional.
You ask:
What did you get for the last one?
“33.”
And suddenly your entire nervous system changes.
If the other person says the same number, confidence rises dramatically.
Two people can be wrong in exactly the same way.
That possibility exists.
Nobody wants to discuss it in the corridor.
Agreement feels like proof.
This is peer review at its most primitive.
Did you get 33?
Yes.
Then reality is probably 33.
We could build entire epistemological theories around students comparing answers outside exam halls.
Knowledge becomes social very quickly.
Inside the exam, you are alone.
Outside, truth is reconstructed collaboratively.
What did you get?
Which method did you use?
Was question two strange?
Did you understand what he wanted in question four?
The professor has the official answer key.
The students construct a parallel one in real time.
Sometimes the parallel system is more useful.
Sometimes it produces mass panic.
One person says:
I got 17.
Another says:
What? I got 42.
A third says:
There was a question 5?
At that point, nobody should be allowed to drive home.
The final detail I remembered about Professor Mustafa was perhaps the most perfectly academic one.
I once asked:
“Professor, can we object to the final exam results?”
“Of course,” he said.
Good.
A process existed.
Then I asked the important follow-up:
“How?”
His answer was approximately:
“If you can find me at the university within two weeks after the results are announced, you can object. But I do not want to give you false hope. You will not find me.”
That is magnificent.
A right existed.
In theory.
The implementation was more complicated.
Every bureaucracy has versions of this.
You may appeal.
Submit this form.
Find this person.
Between these hours.
Except not today.
Come tomorrow.
They are in a meeting.
They are on leave.
The system supports your request perfectly as long as you can complete the quest.
University is excellent preparation for such systems.
Students learn not only mathematics, programming, physics, or engineering.
They learn administrative navigation.
Find the professor.
Find the assistant.
Find the classroom that was changed without anyone telling you.
Find the announcement.
Find the paper.
Get the signature.
Learn whether “office hours” means actual hours or an aspirational concept.
These experiences can be frustrating.
Years later, they are often funny.
That is memory performing quality control.
It discards some of the stress and keeps the absurd structure.
The professor in my memory is not a villain.
Quite the opposite.
I described him as bald, smiling, and worthy of having his hand kissed after finally passing the course.
That detail matters.
Students can complain intensely about a professor and still feel affection.
Academic relationships are complicated because the same person can be responsible for both suffering and learning.
The professor sets the exam you hate.
The professor is also the reason you eventually understand the subject.
The course delays you.
The course also teaches persistence.
At the time, we rarely separate these cleanly.
A difficult professor is simply difficult.
Years later, you may remember the person more warmly than the grade.
That happened more than once in my university years.
There were professors I disliked while taking their courses and appreciated later.
Because difficulty feels different from the other side.
While you are inside it, difficulty looks unnecessary.
Afterward, you can sometimes see what it developed.
Not always.
Some difficulty is genuinely bad teaching.
Some exams are poorly designed.
Some requirements are pointless.
Suffering does not automatically become education just because it happened at a university.
But repeated failure can still teach things the course never intended.
For me, one of those things was separating performance from identity.
A bad exam result means:
You performed badly on that exam.
Maybe because you did not understand the material.
Maybe because you prepared badly.
Maybe because you panicked.
Maybe because the exam was unusually difficult.
Maybe because two of the questions were literally wrong.
What it does not logically mean is:
You are stupid.
Students hear this distinction and often ignore it.
I certainly did.
When you care about doing well, performance feels personal.
If intelligence is part of your identity, academic failure attacks the foundation directly.
This can become especially intense in technical fields.
Everyone around you seems smart.
Someone understands immediately.
Someone finishes early.
Someone says the exam was easy.
There is always one person who says the exam was easy.
That person should probably be questioned by authorities.
You compare.
You conclude.
Maybe I do not belong here.
This thought appears in universities everywhere.
Yet the people having it often eventually graduate.
They become engineers.
Researchers.
Teachers.
Professionals.
The moment felt final.
It was not.
That is another reason old academic failures become valuable memories.
They reveal how many events we mistakenly interpreted as final judgments.
A failed course.
A repeated exam.
A terrible semester.
At the time:
This is everything.
Years later:
That happened.
The scale changes.
Not because the event was meaningless.
Because life continued and gave it context.
Repeatedly taking Calculus and Differential Equations felt enormous then.
Now the repetition is the funny part.
Three times.
Two times.
An accidental academic subscription.
At some point I should have received a loyalty card.
Take Differential Equations three times, get Calculus free.
Yet repetition also created familiarity.
The subject that defeats you once feels mysterious.
The subject that defeats you repeatedly becomes personal.
You know where it hurts.
Persistence stops being inspirational and becomes practical.
Show up again.
Buy the book again if necessary.
Solve the problems.
Take the exam.
Compare answers.
Repeat.
There is nothing cinematic about this kind of persistence.
No motivational soundtrack.
Mostly paperwork and irritation.
But this is how many real accomplishments happen.
Not through one heroic effort.
Through returning to something you would rather never see again.
That red-covered Calculus book represented exactly that.
I had solved every problem in it before the final.
I hated its face.
If books have faces, that one did.
And still, when the exam began, preparation did not produce the reward I expected.
That is another useful lesson.
Effort improves probability.
It does not create a contract with reality.
You can prepare well and fail.
You can prepare badly and get lucky.
The world is not obliged to make outcomes proportional to suffering.
This is unfair.
It is also liberating.
A failure after serious effort does not prove the effort was worthless.
Maybe it changes what you know.
Maybe it reveals a different weakness.
Maybe the test itself was bad.
Maybe you simply try again.
The important thing is not to turn one outcome into a theory of yourself.
I wish I had known that as clearly then as I do now.
The younger version of me left that Calculus final convinced he was an idiot.
Later, he learned that two questions were broken.
The truth was less dramatic.
Usually it is.
And perhaps that is the best reason to preserve these old stories.
Not to celebrate suffering.
To remember how unreliable our conclusions can be while we are still inside the event.
Sometimes you really did not know the answer.
Sometimes nobody did.
Sometimes even the professor could not find it.
