When Solid State Drives Start To Feel Real

Hard drives have always made computers feel mechanical. We can hear them spin, click, and search. A large part of the computer may be electronic, but storage still depends on a moving disk and a tiny head travelling across its surface.
Solid-state drives remove that movement. Data is stored in flash memory, so there is no spinning platter and no mechanical seek time. The result can make a computer feel faster in a way that processor benchmarks do not always explain. Programs open quickly, the operating system starts faster, and small file operations become more responsive.
The problem in 2009 is price. SSD capacity is still expensive compared with ordinary hard drives, and larger drives can cost enough to make the decision difficult. Many users need hundreds of gigabytes for photographs, music, video, and backups. Traditional disks remain the practical choice for large storage.
There are also technical questions about flash memory lifetime, controller quality, and performance after long use. Not all SSDs are equal. Early products have shown that a fast storage technology can still feel slow if the controller handles writes poorly.
Still, I think the direction is clear. Laptops benefit especially because solid-state storage has no moving parts, uses less power in many situations, and is more resistant to physical shock. A portable computer should probably not depend forever on a delicate spinning disk.
The most interesting part is how storage changes the feeling of speed. We often talk about processors when discussing computer performance, but many daily tasks spend time waiting for data. Removing that waiting can make an older processor feel surprisingly modern.
A computer is a system. Improving the slowest part can sometimes matter more than making the fastest part even faster.
