WhatsApp Is Founded

WhatsApp was incorporated in February 2009 by Jan Koum and Brian Acton. The service did not begin as the global messaging platform it later became; its earliest idea was closer to showing short status messages beside contacts.

Apple’s introduction of push notifications helped change the product. WhatsApp could notify a user when a contact updated a status, and the team gradually turned that mechanism into direct messaging. Phone numbers became identities, avoiding the need to create a separate username and friend network.

That design reduced friction: the address book already contained the user’s social graph. Over time WhatsApp added group messaging, media, voice calls, and end-to-end encryption. A small mobile application founded in 2009 eventually became one of the world’s largest communication systems.
