Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2008

Every November 10, Turkiye pauses to remember Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In 2008, the world was shaken by a financial crisis. Even when such crises begin elsewhere, they remind every country that independence is not only a political word. It is also tied to education, production, institutions, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.

Ataturk understood independence in that broad sense. The Republic he founded was not meant to stand still after a military victory. It needed schools, factories, laws, universities, and citizens who believed that the future could be built with reason and effort.

That is why November 10 should not feel distant. The questions behind it are still practical. How does a country become more capable? How does it educate its children? How does it avoid becoming dependent on decisions made elsewhere?

At 09:05, we remember not only a founder, but also the difficult work of remaining worthy of a republic.
