Intel Introduces the First Mainstream SSDs

Intel entered the consumer solid-state drive market in 2008 with products such as the X25-M, which quickly became known for strong random-access performance. SSDs had no mechanical heads or spinning platters, so they behaved very differently from hard disks.
Flash memory could read data quickly, but writing was more complicated because NAND cells had to be erased in blocks before being rewritten. A good SSD therefore depended heavily on its controller, firmware, wear leveling, caching, and garbage collection. Intel’s early drives were notable because they handled small random reads and writes better than many competitors.
The shift to SSDs changed what “fast storage” meant. Hard disks could deliver high sequential throughput but suffered millisecond seek times. Flash reduced access latency by orders of magnitude, making operating systems, applications, and databases feel faster even when headline transfer rates were not the only improvement.
