By 2007, hardware-assisted virtualization was becoming a normal feature of x86 computers rather than something restricted to expensive servers. Intel VT-x and AMD-V added processor support that made it easier for a hypervisor to run guest operating systems safely and efficiently.

Traditional x86 virtualization was difficult because some privileged instructions did not trap cleanly when executed outside the most privileged CPU mode. Hypervisors such as VMware had developed complex binary-translation techniques to work around this. Hardware virtualization added new execution modes so a virtual machine could run most code directly while the hypervisor retained control of sensitive operations.

This mattered on desktops as well as servers. Developers could test several operating systems on one machine, security researchers could isolate experiments, and businesses could consolidate workloads. The same principles later became foundational to cloud computing, where virtual machines are created and destroyed through APIs every day.
