Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2006

Every November 10, Turkiye stops at 09:05 to remember Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In 2006, the country was living through a period when daily life was becoming more digital, faster, and more connected. That makes Ataturk’s emphasis on education and reason feel very concrete. A modern republic cannot be carried only by symbols; it needs people who can read the world around them, ask careful questions, and think with independence.

Ataturk’s legacy is often described with large words: sovereignty, modernization, reform, republic. Those words matter, but they become meaningful only when they touch ordinary life. A good school, a curious student, a teacher who opens a door, a citizen who refuses easy answers: these are also parts of that legacy.

Remembering him in 2006 is therefore not only about looking back. It is about asking whether the habits he valued are still alive: learning, producing, discussing, and trusting knowledge more than noise.
