Remembering Atatürk on November 10, 2006

Every November 10, Türkiye pauses to remember Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

In 2006, almost seven decades after his death, his influence remains visible in the institutions, schools, public life, and collective memory of the Republic he founded. The distance in time has not made his ideas less important. If anything, it makes understanding them more necessary.

Atatürk believed that a modern nation could only move forward through education, science, reason, and civic responsibility. These principles are not tied to one generation. Each generation must reconsider what progress, independence, education, and responsibility require in its own time.

At 09:05, the country falls silent for a moment. That silence is brief, but the memory behind it is not.
