Windows Vista Beta 2 Reaches the Public

Microsoft released Windows Vista Beta 2 to a broad public audience in May 2006. Vista had been in development for years under the codename Longhorn, and the beta finally let ordinary users test features that would define the final operating system.

The visible change was the Aero interface, with composited windows, transparency, and live previews. More important changes were underneath: User Account Control tried to reduce the amount of time users operated with full administrator privileges; the Windows Display Driver Model changed how graphics drivers interacted with the system; and a redesigned networking stack replaced much older Windows code.

The beta also exposed Vista’s biggest challenge. New security and driver models improved the architecture, but they broke assumptions made by older hardware and software. The final release inherited this tension: technically ambitious changes arrived faster than parts of the Windows ecosystem were ready to absorb them.
