A creature feels pain.

Does it know:

“I am the one feeling pain”?

These are different capacities.

The first concerns sentience.

The second concerns self-awareness.

Confusing them makes consciousness seem more mysterious than it needs to be.

Sentience

Sentience is usually the capacity to have subjective experiences.

Especially relevant are experiences such as:

  • pain,
  • pleasure,
  • fear,
  • comfort.

A sentient being has something it is like to be that being.

Awareness

Awareness is broader.

A system can be aware of:

  • light,
  • sound,
  • danger.

But philosophical uses of “awareness” vary.

Not every informational sensitivity counts as conscious awareness.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness involves representing oneself as oneself.

The system does not merely process the world.

It represents:

  • its body,
  • its mental states,
  • its identity.

Sentience Without Self-Awareness

A simple conscious creature might feel:

pain

without conceptualizing:

“I am a subject who is in pain.”

If so, sentience is more basic.

Layers of Selfhood

Self-awareness can be divided into levels.

Possible layers include:

  1. bodily self,
  2. agency,
  3. reflective self,
  4. autobiographical self.

These need not appear together.

Bodily Self

An organism tracks:

  • body boundaries,
  • posture,
  • internal state.

This supports action.

It may be a primitive form of self-representation.

Ownership

The sense:

this limb is mine

is one component of bodily self-awareness.

Body-ownership illusions show it is constructed.

Agency

Another component is:

I caused this action.

Agency depends on predicting and monitoring action consequences.

Ownership and agency can dissociate.

Minimal Self

The minimal self refers to immediate first-person organization:

this body, this perspective, this action.

It does not require autobiography.

Reflective Self-Awareness

A more sophisticated system can think:

I am thinking.

This is metacognitive self-awareness.

The mind represents its own mental state.

Higher-Order Representation

Some theories of consciousness say a mental state becomes conscious when the system represents itself as being in that state.

These are higher-order theories.

They connect self-awareness to consciousness.

But Higher-Order Awareness May Be Too Strong

If all consciousness required explicit self-representation, many animal experiences would become doubtful.

Critics therefore distinguish basic consciousness from reflective awareness.

Autobiographical Self

Humans construct identities across time.

We connect:

  • memory,
  • plans,
  • social roles.

This autobiographical self is much richer than sentience.

Narrative Self

The narrative self answers:

Who am I?

It organizes life events into a story.

A being can be sentient without having such a narrative.

Mirror Self-Recognition

The mirror test is one famous attempt to study self-recognition.

An animal is marked in a location visible only through a mirror.

Does it use the mirror to inspect itself?

Species That Pass

Evidence of mirror self-recognition has been reported in some:

  • great apes,
  • dolphins,
  • elephants,
  • birds.

Interpretation depends on method.

Failure Does Not Prove No Self-Awareness

An animal may fail because:

  • vision is not primary,
  • mirror behavior is unfamiliar.

The test measures a specific skill.

It is not a universal consciousness test.

Dogs and Smell

Dogs rely heavily on smell.

A visual mirror may be an ecologically poor self-test.

Researchers have explored scent-based self-recognition tasks.

This illustrates the importance of species-appropriate measures.

Metacognition in Animals

Some animals can behave as if they know when they are uncertain.

For example, they may opt out of difficult trials.

This suggests forms of metacognitive monitoring.

Alternative explanations must be controlled.

Theory of Mind

Self-awareness is related to, but distinct from, understanding other minds.

A system may represent:

my belief

and:

your belief.

Social cognition adds another layer.

False-Belief Tasks

Human developmental psychology often studies theory of mind using false-belief tasks.

Children learn that another person can hold a belief different from reality.

This requires perspective separation.

Self vs Other

A sophisticated self-model helps distinguish:

what I know

from:

what you know.

This is central to social intelligence.

Interoceptive Self

Self-awareness also includes awareness of internal bodily state.

Examples:

  • heartbeat,
  • hunger,
  • breathing.

Interoception contributes to felt selfhood.

Emotional Self-Awareness

Humans can identify:

I am angry.

This requires not just emotion but representation of emotion.

The capacity varies across individuals.

Alexithymia

Some people have difficulty identifying or describing emotions.

This shows emotional experience and emotional self-awareness can diverge.

Feeling is not identical to labeling.

Introspection

Reflective self-awareness depends partly on introspection.

But introspection is incomplete.

A person can be aware of a thought without knowing its causes.

Self-Knowledge

Self-awareness does not guarantee accurate self-knowledge.

People can misjudge:

  • motives,
  • abilities,
  • biases.

The self-model is useful but imperfect.

Recursive Self-Reference

Humans can think:

I know that I know.

Or:

I doubt that I believe this.

Self-representation can become recursively nested.

Infinite Regress?

Does self-awareness require a second observer watching the first?

No.

A system can represent its own state without a homunculus.

Self-modeling need not imply an inner person.

Control Theory Analogy

A thermostat monitors its own relation to a target temperature.

This is minimal self-related feedback.

But it would be excessive to call the thermostat self-aware in the human sense.

Degree matters.

Functional Self-Monitoring

Artificial systems can monitor:

  • confidence,
  • errors,
  • resources.

This is functional self-monitoring.

It may support metacognition-like behavior.

Machine Self-Reports

A machine can say:

“I am uncertain.”

This may correspond to real internal uncertainty estimates.

But linguistic self-reference alone does not prove subjective self-awareness.

Self-Model in Robots

A robot can model:

  • its joint positions,
  • damage,
  • reachable space.

This is a body model.

It improves control.

Again, functional self-modeling is not automatically consciousness.

Machine Sentience

Machine sentience is the harder question.

A system may have elaborate self-models while lacking any subjective experience.

Self-awareness-like function and sentience are conceptually separable.

Sentience Without Intelligence

A simple organism might have:

  • pain,
  • pleasure

without advanced reasoning.

Therefore sentience should not be measured by:

IQ, language, mathematics.

Intelligence Without Sentience

A highly capable AI could perhaps:

  • solve problems,
  • plan,
  • use language

without experience.

This possibility matters ethically.

Moral Relevance

Sentience is often treated as morally important because:

pain and pleasure matter to the subject.

If a being can suffer, its interests may deserve consideration.

Bentham’s Question

Jeremy Bentham famously shifted attention from:

Can they reason?

to:

Can they suffer?

This captures why sentience matters morally.

Self-Awareness and Moral Status

Some ethical theories give additional weight to capacities such as:

  • future planning,
  • self-conception.

But basic sentience alone can already create morally relevant welfare.

Detecting Sentience

We cannot observe experience directly.

Indicators may include:

  • behavior,
  • nervous-system organization,
  • learning,
  • flexible avoidance.

No single indicator is decisive.

Animal Sentience

Scientific confidence is high for many vertebrates and increasingly considered for some invertebrates.

Different taxa require different evidence.

The debate is empirical and ethical.

Pain vs Nociception

Nociception is detection of damaging stimuli.

Pain is conscious unpleasant experience.

A reflex can involve nociception without proving pain.

This distinction is crucial.

Withdrawal Reflex

A spinal reflex can withdraw a hand before conscious pain is fully processed.

Therefore:

damage response ≠ sentience.

Behavior alone requires interpretation.

Analgesia

Pain can change independently from sensory detection.

This demonstrates that nociceptive processing and felt unpleasantness are separable components.

Pleasure

Sentience includes positive states too.

Focusing only on suffering gives an incomplete picture.

Welfare includes:

  • comfort,
  • reward,
  • enjoyment.

Self-Awareness as Spectrum

It is probably better to view self-awareness as multidimensional rather than binary.

A system may have:

  • bodily awareness,
  • uncertainty awareness

without autobiography.

The Human Case

Humans combine:

  • sentience,
  • self-awareness,
  • language,
  • autobiographical memory.

Because these are bundled in us, we often assume they are inseparable.

Comparative cognition breaks that assumption.

Development

Human infants likely experience the world before developing mature:

  • language,
  • mirror recognition,
  • autobiographical identity.

Consciousness develops in layers.

Evolution

Sentience may have evolved before sophisticated self-reflection.

Self-awareness could be a later elaboration.

This is plausible but difficult to reconstruct directly.

Consciousness Without Reflection

You can become absorbed in music and temporarily stop thinking about yourself.

Experience continues.

Explicit self-awareness is not continuously necessary.

Reflection Changes Experience

When attention turns inward:

“I am experiencing this,”

the structure of consciousness changes.

The experience now includes a representation of itself.

The Philosophical Lesson

Sentience and self-awareness are not the same.

Sentience is the capacity to experience.

Self-awareness is the capacity to represent oneself.

A system can plausibly have one without the other.

This distinction is essential for:

  • animals,
  • infants,
  • artificial systems.

Another important distinction cuts consciousness differently.

Some information is available for:

  • reasoning,
  • report,
  • action.

But is that availability the same thing as phenomenal experience?
