There is a difference between:

a camera detecting red

and:

red appearing to someone.

There is a difference between:

a sensor registering damage

and:

pain hurting.

This difference is the domain of subjective experience.

What Makes Experience Subjective?

An experience is subjective because it occurs:

for a subject.

There is:

a point of view.

The experience is not merely an event in the world.

It is an event as lived from somewhere.

First-Person Perspective

Science usually describes reality from a third-person perspective.

It asks:

What can observers measure?

Subjective experience adds another perspective:

What is it like from within the system?

Perspective Is Not Opinion

“Subjective” can mean:

mere opinion.

That is not the relevant sense.

Pain can be objectively real even though only one person feels that particular pain directly.

Subjective does not mean unreal.

The Subject

What is the subject of experience?

Possibilities include:

  • organism,
  • brain process,
  • self-model,
  • stream of consciousness.

The answer is not obvious.

Experience Without a Strong Self

A system may have experience without possessing a sophisticated autobiographical self.

Infants and many animals may be conscious without reflecting:

“I am a continuing person.”

Subjectivity does not require philosophical self-awareness.

Minimal Subjectivity

At minimum, experience may involve:

  • a centered perspective,
  • distinction between self-related and world-related information.

This is sometimes called a minimal self.

Phenomenology

Phenomenology studies the structure of experience as experienced.

Questions include:

  • what appears,
  • how it appears,
  • how attention changes it.

This philosophical tradition predates modern neuroscience.

Husserl

Edmund Husserl developed phenomenology as a systematic study of conscious experience.

He emphasized intentionality:

consciousness is typically consciousness of something.

Intentionality

A visual experience is about:

an object.

A thought is about:

a proposition.

A fear is about:

a threat.

Subjective experience often has directedness.

Not Every Experience Is Clearly Object-Directed

Some states are diffuse.

Examples include:

  • anxiety,
  • bodily discomfort,
  • mood.

They may not have one obvious object.

Subjective life includes both focused and background experience.

Background Experience

At any moment, consciousness may include:

  • bodily posture,
  • ambient sound,
  • vague mood.

These are not always in focal attention.

Experience has a field-like structure.

Figure and Ground

Some content occupies the foreground.

Other content remains background.

Attention can shift the boundary.

This connects consciousness to earlier ideas about figure and ground.

Temporal Structure

Experience is not a series of isolated points.

The present contains traces of:

  • immediate past,
  • anticipated future.

Subjective time has thickness.

Specious Present

Philosophers and psychologists have used the term specious present for the short interval experienced as now.

A melody illustrates this.

You must retain earlier notes to hear the phrase.

Music

A single note is not a melody.

Consciousness integrates sequences.

The present experience of music contains:

memory of what just happened

and:

expectation of what comes next.

Stream of Consciousness

William James emphasized that consciousness flows.

Thoughts transition.

Percepts fade into memories.

Experience is continuous even when content changes.

Discontinuity

Yet neural processing is not literally smooth in every respect.

Attention and perception may update in bursts.

The relationship between neural discreteness and phenomenal continuity remains debated.

Privacy

Your experience is privately accessible.

Another person can observe:

  • your brain,
  • your behavior.

They cannot literally occupy your first-person perspective.

Privacy Is Epistemic

This privacy may concern access, not substance.

A password-protected file is inaccessible to outsiders without being nonphysical.

Likewise, first-person privilege does not prove dualism.

First-Person Authority

If you say:

“I have a headache,”

your report has special authority.

Others usually cannot override it based solely on external observation.

But first-person authority is not absolute.

Misidentifying Experience

People can confuse:

  • anxiety with excitement,
  • memory with imagination.

They can misinterpret causes.

Subjective access is immediate, but interpretation can be wrong.

Experience vs Judgment

A person may experience:

a visual illusion

while knowing:

the illusion is false.

The percept and the judgment can diverge.

This shows subjective appearance is not belief.

Müller-Lyer Illusion

Two lines may look different in length even after you know they are equal.

Knowledge does not erase the perceptual experience.

Experience has partial autonomy.

Transparency

When we look at a red apple, we seem aware of:

the apple,

not:

our neural representation.

Experience is often transparent toward the world.

Transparency and Construction

The percept may still be constructed.

We experience:

a stable external object.

The brain hides the computational process producing that appearance.

The Brain Does Not Show Its Work

We are usually conscious of:

results,

not:

intermediate processing.

Visual computation involving thousands of neural operations appears simply as:

“there is a cup.”

Introspection Is Selective

We cannot inspect:

  • synaptic weights,
  • early visual features,
  • grammatical parsing

directly.

Subjective access covers only a fraction of mental processing.

Experience and Report

A report is an action caused by many systems.

The experience itself may precede or exceed what can be reported.

Words compress phenomenology.

Richness Debate

Some philosophers argue conscious experience is richer than what attention and working memory can access.

Others argue apparent richness is an illusion.

This is an active debate.

Sperling Experiment

George Sperling’s iconic-memory experiments showed people briefly have access to more visual information than they can report all at once.

Whether this demonstrates richly conscious content or short-lived preconscious representation is debated.

Change Blindness

People can fail to notice large visual changes.

This suggests our sense of a detailed visual world may exceed actual maintained representation.

Subjective confidence can mislead.

Inattentional Blindness

People focused on one task can miss highly visible events.

Attention strongly shapes conscious access.

Seeing is not merely opening the eyes.

Experience and Attention

Attention can:

  • enhance,
  • select,
  • stabilize

content.

But some theories argue consciousness can occur without focal attention.

The relationship is not settled.

Experience and Memory

A conscious state can vanish without being stored.

If you cannot remember an experience, did it occur?

This creates methodological difficulty.

Retrospective Report

Most consciousness experiments ask after the fact:

What did you see?

Memory becomes part of measurement.

The experience itself has already passed.

Experience and Language

Language lets us classify and communicate experience.

But experience likely predates language evolutionarily and developmentally.

Language is not required for all subjectivity.

Ineffability Again

Some aspects of experience resist precise description.

That may reflect:

  • limited vocabulary,
  • high-dimensional phenomenology.

Ineffability need not imply supernatural properties.

High-Dimensional Experience

A smell can contain subtle dimensions difficult to name.

Experts can learn richer labels.

Language compresses a complex perceptual space.

Qualitative Similarity

We can compare experiences:

orange is more like red than blue.

These similarity judgments make phenomenology scientifically tractable.

Subjective experience has structure.

Psychophysics

Psychophysics links:

physical stimulus

to:

reported experience.

It maps lawful relationships across the first-person/third-person boundary.

Neural Decoding

Neuroscientists can sometimes predict what a person sees from brain activity.

This reduces privacy at the informational level.

It does not give the scientist the person’s actual experience.

Decoding Is Not Sharing

Knowing:

you see red

is different from:

seeing red as you do.

Information about experience is not identical to possession of that experience.

Empathy

Humans approximate others’ subjective states through:

  • imagination,
  • similarity,
  • social learning.

Empathy bridges perspectives imperfectly.

It does not literally merge them.

Other Minds

We assume other humans have experiences because of:

  • behavioral similarity,
  • biological similarity,
  • shared development.

This is an inference.

It is extraordinarily strong in ordinary life.

Animal Subjectivity

Animals may have subjective worlds unlike ours.

A bat’s echolocation is not simply:

human hearing plus extra data.

Its perceptual world may be organized differently.

Machine Subjectivity

If an artificial system were conscious, its perspective might be radically unfamiliar.

It might organize experience around:

  • text,
  • high-dimensional vectors,
  • nonhuman sensors.

Human phenomenology need not be the template.

Subjectivity and Self-Model

A system may model:

this body, this location, these goals.

Such a self-model could create a centered perspective.

But a model of self does not automatically imply subjective experience.

Subjectivity and Embodiment

Bodies provide a natural center.

Sensory signals arrive relative to:

  • this eye,
  • this skin,
  • this body.

Embodiment may help organize first-person structure.

Interoception

Internal bodily signals contribute to subjective presence.

Heartbeat, breathing, gut state

shape experience.

The self is not only visually located.

Predictive Processing

Predictive theories treat perception as inference from a generative model.

Subjective experience may correspond to the system’s best current model of:

world, body.

This explains structure.

The hard problem remains.

Subjective Certainty

Descartes used the apparent certainty of thought as a philosophical foundation.

Even if the world is doubted, experience itself seems difficult to deny.

Something appears.

Can Experience Be Illusory?

A visual content can be illusory.

But can the fact:

“there is an experience”

itself be an illusion?

Illusionism says some properties attributed to experience are mistaken.

Critics argue the occurrence of appearance cannot itself disappear.

Appearance and Reality

Consciousness is peculiar because appearance is part of the reality being studied.

If something seems painful, the seeming itself is a real mental event.

This gives phenomenology unusual epistemic status.

The Explanatory Target

A theory of consciousness must not only explain:

  • reports,
  • discrimination.

It must identify what makes subjective perspective possible.

Otherwise the original puzzle remains.

The Philosophical Lesson

Subjective experience is not merely private data.

It is the fact that information processing appears from a point of view.

This first-person organization is central to consciousness.

The challenge is explaining how a physical system acquires:

an inside.

Not every conscious creature needs to know:

“I am conscious.”

A being may be capable of feeling without possessing a reflective self-concept.
