Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, and Pragmatics

Language works through several interacting layers.
A word has internal structure.
Words combine into phrases.
Phrases express propositions.
Speakers use those propositions in situations.
Four major concepts help separate these layers:
- morphology,
- syntax,
- semantics,
- pragmatics.
They overlap.
They are not interchangeable.
Morphology
Morphology studies the internal structure of words.
Consider:
unhappiness
It can be analyzed as:
un + happy + ness.
Each part contributes structure or meaning.
These minimal meaningful units are called morphemes.
Free and Bound Morphemes
Some morphemes can stand alone.
book
run
Others cannot.
-ed
un-
-s
These are bound morphemes.
Languages build words by combining both kinds.
Inflection
Inflection changes grammatical form without creating a fundamentally new lexical item.
English examples include:
walk → walked
cat → cats
The core word remains recognizable.
Grammar adds information such as tense or number.
Derivation
Derivation often creates a new word or category.
happy → happiness
teach → teacher
legal → illegal
Morphology can therefore generate vocabulary, not just grammatical variants.
Morphological Diversity
Languages differ greatly.
English uses relatively modest inflection.
Turkish can build long words by adding multiple suffixes.
Other languages organize grammatical information differently.
There is no single universal word architecture.
Syntax
Syntax studies how words and phrases combine.
Compare:
“The dog chased the cat.”
“The cat chased the dog.”
Same words.
Different structure.
Different meaning.
Syntax organizes relationships.
Hierarchy
Syntax is not just word order.
Sentences contain nested phrases.
A prepositional phrase may attach to one constituent rather than another.
A relative clause may modify one noun phrase.
Hierarchical structure determines interpretation.
Semantics
Semantics studies conventional meaning.
Questions include:
- What does a word denote?
- What proposition does a sentence express?
- How do smaller meanings combine?
Semantics connects linguistic form to interpreted content.
Lexical Semantics
Words have meanings and relationships.
Examples:
dog / animal
hot / cold
buy / sell
Lexical semantics studies:
- synonymy,
- antonymy,
- category relations,
- polysemy.
Words live in semantic networks.
Compositional Semantics
The meaning of a sentence depends partly on:
- word meanings,
- syntactic structure.
This is the principle of compositionality.
“The cat chased the dog”
and
“The dog chased the cat”
contain the same lexical items.
Structure changes the proposition.
Pragmatics
Pragmatics studies meaning in context and use.
The sentence:
“Can you open the window?”
literally asks about ability.
In ordinary conversation, it usually functions as a request.
Pragmatics explains the additional inference.
Literal and Intended Meaning
A speaker can mean more than the literal sentence states.
“There’s a draft in here.”
may function as:
“Please close the window.”
The listener infers intention from context.
Human communication is inferential.
Speech Acts
Language performs actions.
A speaker can:
- promise,
- apologize,
- order,
- warn,
- declare.
These are speech acts.
Words can alter social relations when spoken under appropriate conditions.
Context
Pragmatic interpretation depends on:
- who is speaking,
- where,
- when,
- shared knowledge.
The same sentence can perform different acts in different contexts.
Phonology
Although not in the title, another major layer is phonology.
Phonology studies how a language organizes sound or sign contrasts.
It determines which distinctions matter linguistically.
Language is layered from physical form upward.
A Layered Example
Take:
“She walked home.”
Morphology
walk + -ed
Syntax
subject + verb + complement
Semantics
a past event involving a female referent moving homeward
Pragmatics
perhaps an answer to “How did she get home?”
The same utterance supports several analyses.
Layers Interact
The layers are conceptually separable.
In real language, they influence each other.
Morphology can resolve syntax.
Syntax can resolve semantic ambiguity.
Pragmatic expectations can affect how syntax is interpreted.
Language is an interacting system.
Morphology and Syntax
Some grammatical information can be expressed morphologically in one language and syntactically in another.
Languages distribute structure differently.
This shows why linguistic categories are relational rather than tied to one surface form.
Syntax and Semantics
Syntax constrains meaning.
But meaning also influences parsing.
“The astronomer saw the star with the telescope.”
World knowledge helps decide who has the telescope.
Grammar alone may permit multiple structures.
Semantics and Pragmatics
Literal meaning can remain constant while pragmatic interpretation changes.
“You’re early.”
It can be:
- praise,
- surprise,
- complaint,
- irony.
Context supplies communicative force.
Ambiguity at Every Layer
Ambiguity can occur in:
- word meaning,
- syntax,
- reference,
- pragmatic intention.
Language remains usable because humans combine multiple information sources.
Understanding is constraint satisfaction.
Why the Distinctions Matter
Without these distinctions, we may ask the wrong questions.
A computer can parse syntax correctly while missing pragmatics.
A child may know word meaning while still learning morphology.
A sentence can be grammatical but nonsensical.
Each layer has its own problems.
Language Models
Modern language models learn statistical patterns across all these layers to varying degrees.
They can often reproduce:
- morphology,
- syntax,
- semantic associations,
- pragmatic patterns.
But performance does not automatically settle whether they genuinely understand.
That debate requires a theory of meaning.
The Next Question
One distinction deserves special attention.
A sentence can be perfectly well-formed yet fail to convey coherent meaning.
Formal systems can manipulate symbols without knowing what they refer to.
So the next question is:
Why is syntax not the same as meaning?
