Grammar is often taught as a list of rules about correct writing.

Do not split this.

Do not say that.

Use this form.

But in linguistics, grammar means something deeper.

It is the structured system that allows speakers to:

  • form expressions,
  • recognize patterns,
  • interpret relations.

Grammar is not merely etiquette.

It is architecture.

Descriptive Grammar

A descriptive grammar asks:

How does a language actually work?

It studies the patterns speakers reliably use.

If millions of native speakers use a construction consistently, it belongs to the linguistic system whether or not a style guide approves.

Prescriptive Grammar

A prescriptive grammar asks:

How should people write or speak under a chosen standard?

Prescriptive rules matter in:

  • education,
  • publishing,
  • professional communication.

They are social norms, not the whole science of grammar.

Grammar Is Mostly Unconscious

Native speakers know enormous amounts of grammar without being able to state the rules.

An English speaker immediately senses that:

“The child opened the door.”

is natural,

while:

“Child the door the opened.”

is not.

Implicit knowledge exceeds explicit explanation.

Word Order

Languages use different word orders.

English commonly follows:

Subject–Verb–Object.

Turkish commonly allows Subject–Object–Verb patterns.

Word order is one grammatical resource.

It is not universal in one fixed form.

Grammar is hierarchical.

Syntax Trees

A syntax tree makes relationships visible.

Ambiguity

Categories
