The Strange Feeling of Finding Old Files

Old digital files are strange objects.

A paper notebook looks old. Its pages change color. The cover becomes soft. Time is visible.

A file from fifteen years ago can still look exactly the same.

You open it and suddenly the past appears without any warning.

An old photo, a small text file, a forgotten piece of code, or a strange folder name can bring back a period of life very quickly. Sometimes the file itself is not important. The memory around it is.

I have found old code that made me smile. The solution was simple, the style was different, and some choices looked strange to me now.

But I also remembered the person who wrote it.

At that time, maybe the problem felt difficult. Maybe finishing that small program felt important.

This is why I do not like judging old work too harshly.

We see it with today’s knowledge, but it was created with yesterday’s knowledge.

Old files also show how technology changes. Formats disappear. Programs stop opening. Websites vanish. Links break.

Digital things look permanent, but they are not.

Sometimes I think this makes personal websites and local archives more meaningful. They are imperfect attempts to keep small pieces of time.

Of course, keeping everything is impossible and probably unhealthy. Some files should be deleted. Some pages should disappear.

Still, I like finding one forgotten thing from the past now and then.

It is a small reminder that I have been many slightly different people.

And all of them left files behind.
