Understanding The Realities Of Growing Old

Getting older is strange because it happens slowly until one day it feels sudden. A photograph, a birthday, a small physical change, or seeing someone younger can make time visible in a way the calendar cannot. When we are young, age often looks like something happening to other people. Later, we understand that there is no separate road. We are already on it.

This can create fear. The body changes. Energy changes. People we love become older too. Some possibilities become smaller.

But age also adds things. Experience becomes a kind of memory library. Problems that once felt enormous can become familiar. We learn which arguments are not worth having and which people deserve more of our time. I do not believe getting older automatically makes a person wise.

Years can pass without reflection. But years give us material from which wisdom can be built. The hardest part may be accepting that time cannot be negotiated with. We can take care of ourselves, make plans, and try to live well. We cannot stop movement.

Maybe the better goal is not to stay young. Maybe it is to stay interested. Interested in people. Interested in learning. Interested in the next ordinary day.

Age changes the body. I hope curiosity can remain younger.
