Pokemon Go And When Augmented Reality Left The Lab

For years, augmented reality has been easy to demonstrate and difficult to make ordinary. Researchers can place digital objects over a camera image, companies can build impressive prototypes, and technology presentations can show what may be possible. Most people still do not wake up thinking they need augmented reality.
Pokémon Go has changed that almost overnight.
The game uses a smartphone, GPS, maps, and a camera to place a familiar game world on top of physical locations. Players walk through real streets to find virtual creatures, visit PokéStops, and interact with gyms. The augmented-reality camera view is only one part of the system, but the whole experience connects digital rules with physical movement.
What interests me most is that millions of people are using location-based computing without thinking about the technical terms. They are not studying augmented reality or geographic information systems. They are trying to catch Pokémon.
This is often how technology becomes normal. The application arrives before the vocabulary.
The game also shows the power of combining existing technologies. GPS is not new. Smartphones are not new. Mobile data, cameras, maps, and game mechanics are not new. The novelty comes from arranging these pieces around a strong idea and a well-known fictional world.
There are problems too. Players staring at screens can forget traffic and physical surroundings. Large crowds can appear in places that were never designed for them. Location data raises privacy questions, and the servers have struggled under enormous demand.
Still, I think Pokémon Go will be remembered even if the current excitement becomes smaller. It has given many people a first personal experience of software that depends on where their body is in the real world.
Augmented reality may eventually use glasses or other devices instead of phones. It may enter education, tourism, maintenance, navigation, and work.
For now, its most visible ambassador is a game.
That seems appropriate. New technology often becomes easier to understand when people are playing with it.
